Whether it’s soccer, baseball, rollerblading, tennis, or hockey, there are people who break and damage their teeth as a result of participating in sports without any sort of mouthguard. In fact, mouth guards for sports should be worn by any child or adult who participates in high contact sports. Accidents can happen. wearing a mouthguard is the best preventative medicine we can recommend. They not only protect teeth, but also help prevent damage to soft tissue such as your child’s lips and tongue.

Types of Mouth Guards for Sports

There are many types of mouthguards that are available at a fraction of the cost of repairing a tooth, let alone several teeth.

  1. Over the Counter Mouth Protectors – For just a few dollars, any sporting goods store or department store with a sports section will have an inexpensive solution. These are the worst option. There is little you can to to adjust the fit and they are bulky, making it difficult to speak (communicate with teammates) and breath (compete at peak performance.)
  2. Gel or “Boil and Bite” Mouth Guards – The problem with these mouthguards is also fit.  They are formed to the teeth by heating in boiling water so that the material becomes soft enough to partially mold to the teeth.  This results in an imprecise fit that also makes breathing difficult.
  3. Custom Fitted Mouth Guard for Sports – At Benchmark Dental we will make you or your child a custom designed mouthguard that is fitted to his or her teeth. This allows for good breathing, and does a better job of protecting the teeth. They are custom designed by taking an impression of your athlete’s teeth then molding the mouth guard right here in one of our Northern Colorado dental offices.Special Consideration for Braces – When it comes to soft tissue damage, mouth injuries to people wearing braces can be particularly troublesome! Just consider your investment in your child’s teeth that could be wiped out in a moment. We strongly recommend the use of custom mouth guards for anyone wearing braces. the process of molding the mouth protector to the teeth affords the best possible protection!
